Nursing research utility project

Section A: Problem Identification

Various problems in nursing require solutions to ensure that the practice of nursing is

respected and that nurses perform their duties as required. One of the problems is the skipping of
medication by the patients. This problem derails the functions of nurses and therefore requires a
solution.

Problem identification is important because it enhances the health of patients. Prescribed
drugs should be taken as per the recommended dosage to promote health. Patients who fail to
adhere to these instructions put their health at risk and this is a grave concern to the nurses.
Various studies have indicated the inherent dangers of failing to follow medical prescriptions of
the health provider.

Any project objective should be specific, measurable and realistic to ensure that it is
achieved. The objective of this project therefore, is to investigate the factors that contribute to
skipping of drugs by patients in the health facilities and the ramifications of this action.

This problem can be solved. One of the proposed solutions to this problem is for the
nurses to establish positive relationships with the patients and inform them of the benefits of
ensuring that they finish their dosage. These interactions will also help them to know whether the
patients are allergic to drugs or not and hence provide alternative medications.

Section B: Solution Description

The proposed solution as stated earlier is to establish positive relationships with the
patients. This will give the nurse an opportunity to interrogate the patient on issues pertaining to

drugs and their dosage. There are various issues pertaining to skipping drugs that will be
revealed through this discussion hence prompting adoption of appropriate measures. Some of the
issues that will be revealed include, the costs of the drugs, being allergic, taboos or
cultural/religious ideologies and many others.

The proposed solutions are consistent with the current research knowledge base in various
ways. Many of the patients are not able to access to medication or drugs prescribed because of
financial problems coupled by the high cost of drugs (Leeann, H et al. 2012). This is a problem
that many researchers have identified in their studies and therefore, such problem can be solved
in most cases through the assistance of the medical practitioners or nurses. Nurses can also assist
if they know about the status of the patient. They can appeal for well-wishers to support the
patient.

The proposed solution can be easily implemented. What will be required however is for
the hospital management to arrange for a training to acquaint the nurses on the importance of
relating with patients and sharing with them on issues pertaining to drugs and dosage.

A solution to this problem must be arrived at by factoring in the organizational or the
community resources and culture. Every organization has its own culture or way of doing things
and therefore, it this remains an important factor. Resources also are important in ensuring
implementation of the solution or not. This solution, therefore, is consistent with the
organizational culture because, it is the purpose of the organization to always to promote health.
The resources required to implement this is the training cost, which the hospital has capacity to
support.

Section C: Research Support

Various researchers support this solution. In a health facility, health providers have the
obligation of ensuring that they provide quality services to impact on the health of the clients.
One of the things that contributes or promotes health is to ensure that the patients are well
informed about their conditions and how to take their drugs. Therefore, an interaction is
paramount. Various research reports and projects have been relied upon and they indicate the
benefit of informing patients and interacting with them. Some of the reports are from the
professionals in the field of medicine, Non-governmental organizations as United Nations and
Red Cross among others. These reports are valid because experts compile them after thorough
research. They are also verified by authorized organizations or agencies established by the law.
Some of the reports also have methodologies they used to arrive at the findings, data collection
and incorporate other people researches.
