VARK Analysis

VARK Analysis Paper
Learning styles represent the different approaches to learning based on preferences,
weaknesses, and strengths. For learners to best achieve the desired educational outcome,
learning styles must be considered when creating a plan. Complete “The VARK
Questionnaire,” located on the VARK website, and then complete the following:
Click “OK” to receive your questionnaire scores.
Once you have determined your preferred learning style, review the corresponding link to
view your learning preference.
Review the other learning styles: visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic, and multimodal
(listed on the VARK Questionnaire Results page).
Compare your current preferred learning strategies to the identified strategies for your
preferred learning style.
Examine how awareness of learning styles has influenced your perceptions of teaching and
learning.
In a paper (750‐1,000 words), summarize your analysis of this exercise and discuss the
overall value of learning styles. Include the following:
Provide a summary of your learning style according the VARK questionnaire.
Describe your preferred learning strategies. Compare your current preferred learning
strategies to the identified strategies for your preferred learning style.
Describe how individual learning styles affect the degree to which a learner can understand
or perform educational activities. Discuss the importance of an educator identifying
individual learning styles and preferences when working with learners.
Discuss why understanding the learning styles of individuals participating in health
promotion is important to achieving the desired outcome. How do learning styles ultimately
affect the possibility for a behavioral change? How would different learning styles be
accommodated in health promotion?

VARK

The suitability of the learning styleS applied by one individual may differ significantly from that
of other people due to factors that include the preference for strategies that boost an individual’s
comprehension. As such, the VARK questionnaire presents various learning strategies that may
be applied in the acquisition of knowledge and relevant information based on an individual’s
preference. These strategies include the multimodal, aural, read/write, kinesthetic, and visual
approaches that describe different methods through which people may acquire knowledge based
on preferences. More precisely, the multimodal strategy describes a set of techniques that are
used to impact the understanding of an individual (VARK Learn Limited, 2020). The aural
approach necessitates sitting through lectures for individuals living on or close to campuses.
These are coupled with the engagement in classroom discussions and partaking in group-related
tasks.

Similarly, the kinesthetic mode entails a learner’s involvement in hands-on activities put
in place to boost his/her understanding of the material as opposed to sitting through lectures. The
read/write approach focuses on the actual writing of essays and reports that allow the learners to
break down complex words and sentences into straightforward definitions outlined in
dictionaries and glossaries. The learners who prefer this approach may further opt to read books
to acquire an in-depth comprehension of the teaching subjects. Lastly, the visual method
involves the use of graphical representations that facilitate the creation of a better comprehension
of the various learning concepts (VARK Learn Limited, 2020). As such, the successful
completion of the VARK questionnaire revealed that my preferred learning strategy differs

VARK 3
significantly from the models described above. The difference is based on the accentuation of
various ways through which content is understood and applied. More precisely, my responses to
questions point out the fact that the comprehension of the application of different concepts
necessitates reading through the written instructions or following the diagrammatical illustrations
(Kurilovas, 2019).

Most fundamentally, the questionnaire revealed that hands-on practices promote the
acquisition of knowledge on different subjects through the prolonged retention of crucial aspects
or steps taken. Besides, the repetition of confusing or unclear topics contributes to the
development of an in-depth understanding. These factors indicate my preference for some
learning strategies that include engagement in group discussion, writing notes, repetition,
watching videos, and the use of graphical representations that outline the application of different
concepts (VARK Learn Limited, 2020).

Perceptions related to Learning and Teaching Styles

Based on the scores obtained from the questionnaire, it is apparent that my preferred
approach includes aural at 8 points, kinesthetic and reading/writing at 10 and 1 points
respectively, and visual at 3 points. These results reflect my preference for descriptive and
illustrative learning strategies such as diagrams, symbols, and graphical representations that
significantly contribute to the acquisition of relevant information and hence knowledge about
different concepts. Similarly, visual learning strategies reflect the unique ways of applying
different ideas to acquire knowledge and sharpen skills (VARK Learn Limited, 2020). However,
despite the high preference for these approaches, it is evident that they should be coupled with
other conceptual frameworks that include class attendance and participation in discussions as

VARK 4
outlined in the aural model. These are followed closely by the adoption of technological
advancement capture pertinent facts during lectures and the incorporation of an imaginative
approach while explaining different phenomena. Additionally, the reading/writing and
kinesthetic approaches facilitate comprehension through jotting down notes on relevant topics
(Pulcini et al. 2017).

Effects of the Learning Styles on an Individual’s understanding and performance of
educational activities

Regardless of their distinctiveness in the approaches used, these learning styles are
equally important as they boost the comprehension of various topics. As a result, an individual’s
learning strategies and preferences play an integral role in influencing his/her ability to visualize
and attain the desired outcomes. More importantly, these learning strategies significantly
contributes to the acquisition and retention of information that may be utilized in the
performance of educational activities (Kurilovas, 2019). For instance, when a student uses tape
recorders to capture information during a lecture, he/she may replay the recording over and over
until a point in which understanding is attained. As such, when given a test on the same topic, the
student will recall the information in the recording and effectively answer the various questions.
Similarly, an individual who prefers visual representations would have a vivid memory of the
steps taken in the accomplishment of specific goals and will, in return, replicate them in the
performance of educational activities (Pulcini et al. 2017).

The Accommodation of Different Learning Styles in Health Promotion

VARK 5
The ability of educators to identify an individual’s learning styles and preferences entails
a crucial aspect in the teaching process as it determines the approach applied in imparting
knowledge. For instance, if a teacher identifies that one of his/her students prefers visual learning
strategies, the suitable procedure for imparting knowledge would involve the incorporation of
videos, graphical representations, and other components (Kurilovas, 2019). This way, the teacher
may boost the learner’s comprehension and ability to perform educational activities through the
use of learning styles and preferences that allow the latter to acquire relevant information and
knowledge. For instance, in health promotion, understanding an individual’s learning style would
facilitate the use of strategies that facilitate the acquisition of information and knowledge related
to specific health concerns and mitigation strategies that should be applied (Kurilovas, 2019). If
the learner prefers aural, kinesthetic, visual, or a combination of the styles, the educator’s role in
health promotion would involve the incorporation of strategies that enhance his/her ability to
understand the content.
