Time Series Designs

Post a description of your area of specialization and a therapeutic outcome you might
like to measure. Then, describe the time series design that you would use, why you
would use that particular design, and how you would use it.

Time Series Designs: Research on How Welders Use Gas Masks In Their Work
I am a supervisor in a firm that deals with paper manufacturing. I oversee a group of
technicians who do different general maintenance and repair works on different components
within the factory. Welding is a very common task here and due to the dangers of this
practice, technicians are required to wear protective clothing which include hand gloves,
helmet and recently, a gas mask (McCleary and McDowall, 2012).
The aim of this study is to a) investigate the benefits of gas masks to welders, b)
investigate how welders use these masks, and c) find out just how gas masks can be used
more effectively. Our company has decided to use time series design analysis to understand
how people in the factory use personal protective equipment (PPE) to and if this has any
effect on their safety. This is a quasi-type of time series analysis whereby I seek to infer the
causal effect of an interventional measure. I settled on this method because it helps get data
characteristics over a time sequence. Furthermore, the validity of data in this method is quite
To use the time series design in this experiment, I will put in place a mechanism of
measuring how the welder uses his gas mask, and how many times for each action. My data
in this experiment is the health conditions of the welders over a period of 60 days. On day 1, I

measure the variables of the experiment for the welder without a gas mask. On the 31 st day,
the welder is issued with a gas mask for use in his daily work. After the research time of 60
days, effectiveness of the intervention is measured (McCleary and McDowall, 2012).
