Problem Statement
The Healthy People 2020 goals are to: attain high-quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death; achieve healthy equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups; create social and physical environments that promote good health for all (CDC, 2018). Although the USA boasts the most advanced medical system in the world, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HRSA, 2018) reported a public health crisis where millions of Americans lack adequate healthcare; most of which live in medically underserved areas across the U.S.A. The medically underserved areas and population are identified areas/populations with a lack of access to primary care services. It may include those who face economic, cultural, or linguistic barriers to healthcare. The inner cities and remote areas of the nation are most in demand (HRSA, 2018). The problem has no end in sight with shifting demographics and economics contributing to a scarcity of primary care physicians. The purpose of this investigation is to determine the health and wellness effect on the population that lives in a region that is considered to be medically underserved. This study proposes the use of APRNs to fill the gap where PCPs are not in abundance.
Research Question
How has living in an area that is considered medically underserved affected the health and wellness of its’ residents?
Sampling Plan & Design
A case study would be done by using a cluster random sample in order to determine access to physical therapy services among the medically underserved. Three community clinics located in the medically underserved areas would be used to serve as units of analysis. Then 10 healthcare providers who work at the clinics and 100 patients who receive care a the clinics (volunteers) would participate in the study using a questionnaire and interview to collect data. the targeted population would be adult men and women using the clinic for care.
