How alignment between organizational values and values of the
nurse impact nurse engagement and patient outcomes
Values can be defined as normative beliefs regarding
desired or preferred result and proper standards of
conduct. In a healthcare facility, values are the criteria
for rendering patient care and not just attributes which
are innate in people (Coe, 2011).
In essence, the values of nurses affect their behavior
and ultimately patient outcomes; some nurses thrive
and ensure the provision of quality care despite the
difficult environment that nurses face, whilst others
tend to have reduced productivity (Coe, 2011).
Aligning the values of the organization and the
personal values of the nurse improves
organizational efficacy and effectiveness.
Besides, the alignment will greatly contribute to
their optimal job performance which would in
turn, affect patient outcomes as well the overall
performance of the organization as measured
by service, quality and operational measures.
Furthermore, the alignment will result in increased
productivity; decrease or lack of delays in treatment;
adherence to nursing policy and policy of the
organization; and decreased number of errors.
There would also be reduced errors; decreased lengths
of stay leading to improvement in quality of care; and
satisfaction of patients because of increased patient
focus.
More importantly, the values of the
organization, and their alignment with those of
the nurses would have a direct and major
impact on the quality of services and quality of
care provided.
All these would significantly improve nurse
engagement and patient outcomes.
It is noteworthy that the alignment will
contribute to a sense of meaning to the nurse’s
work. In turn, meaningful work will contribute
to enhanced levels of personal satisfaction
which would promote higher levels of
engagement among the workforce.
Consequently, this would most likely lead to
improved quality of care and patient outcomes,
as well as better nurse satisfaction on the whole
(Coe, 2011).
How an individual can use effective communication techniques to
overcome workplace challenges, encourage collaboration across
groups and promote effective problem-solving
There are a number of effective techniques of
communication that an individual can use.
(i) listening and learning. It is notable that effective
communication is basically 2-way since it offers the
communicators the chance to listen and learn – it is vital
for them to exploit that opportunity.
Each chance for interaction provides the communicators
with the opportunity to not only learn, but also improve.
Finding out areas in which an individual has
not been properly understood, or where
objectives have not been realized, could help an
individual to be more effective when he/she
engages with colleagues.
This, in turn, would help in overcoming
workplace challenges, encouraging
collaboration across various groups, and
promoting effective problem-solving.
(ii) Selecting appropriate communication tools or a
combination of tools: one’s audience and purpose
would help him or her in determining the optimal tool
of communication, or a mixture of tools to utilize.
When communicating one on one, in-person or phone
discussions might be more appropriate instead of
email.
Basically, selecting the wrong tool could hamper
one’s capability to be effective (Richards, 2012).
(iii) Timing: one should also consider the
timing of his or her communication.
Approaching the boss immediately following a
tense sales meeting is perhaps not the best time
(Richards, 2012).
(iv) Being clear and transparent: one has to
be very transparent and clear in how he or she
communicates. Dubious statements or those
that have a double meaning should be avoided.
Instance where the values of the organization
and values of the nurse did or did not align
From my professional experience, there was a specific
instance in which the values of the organization and
those of the individual nurses did align.
In this instance, the organizational values of the
healthcare facility included: (i) safeguard the patient’s
right to privacy; (ii) maintain confidentiality of
patient; and (iii) quality care and respect for patient.
The values of the individual nurses included:
(i) maintain competency in the area of practice;
(ii) accept accountability and responsibility for
own practice; (iii) self-respect, loyalty,
helpfulness and loyalty. The hospital also had
these values.
The values of the nurses and those of the
organization aligned.
Impact of the instance on nurse engagement and
patient outcome
The outcome of the instance on nurse engagement was
that the alignment of values influenced behavior of the
nurses in the work place.
In turn, this led to a considerable improvement in
nurse job satisfaction, improved communication
between the organization and nurses, and staff
development that promoted higher levels of
engagement in the nurses.
The impact on patient outcome was that the
higher levels of engagement in the nurses led to
patient focus, improved patient satisfaction, as
well as improved quality of care.
In turn, this resulted in improved patient
outcomes.
