Some of the IOM Future recommendations BSN includes increasing the proportion of
nurses with a Baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020, doubling the number of nurses with a
doctorate by 2020, and ensure that nurses engage in lifelong learning. This paper is reflection on
how these recommendations would affect my career.
These recommendations require the current nurses to take an initiative of pursuing higher
education to remain relevant in the job markets in future. I therefore will increase my level of
education to remain relevant in this field. This step will enable me to acquire the relevant skills
and knowledge in the current days making me a competitive practitioner. It will also enable me
develop competencies in care management knowledge and decision making skills in various
clinical situations and care settings. This will allow me to compete better in this current job
markets because few people have attained such level of education. Being among them will
definitely give me an added advantage.
REFLECTION PAPER
Increasing my level of education will also affect my role in the future of nursing. This
education will equip me with different skills and knowledge that rhyme with the health issues
that are affecting the people. The world is changing and the health problems are changing. This
therefore requires different techniques to addresses the new kinds of diseases that are cropping
up. The advancement of technology is also an important area which requires practitioners that
are well equipped with skills in technology to apply it in their service delivery. Furthermore,
there are new competencies emerging in the areas of decision-making, systems thinking, quality
improvement, team leaderships that requires people with high levels of education to handle
amicably (Institute of Medicine (2013). Having these skills will help me to render better and
quality health services to the patient in future.
