The Future of Nursing
The nursing profession is one of the most vital professions in any country in the world. Success in the nursing sector is very important for the health of the nation. Therefore, government investment and support for this sector is very important. There are a number of challenges in the nursing sector which hinder effective deliverance of nursing services to citizens. These challenges need to be dealt with to ensure that nurses are well positioned to bring change and advancement in the health sector.
Nurses practicing nursing should have no limits. They should attend to their patients and prescribe medications for them without any external supervision such as that from physicians. The duties that different health professionals perform should basically be guided by the scope of their education and training but not by state laws that give regulations without bearing in mind the scope of education and training that the professionals have. State laws should provide a favorable environment for nurses in order for them to deliver their services effectively. Laws should focus on the welfare of nurses such as; setting up community residence for nurses (Institute of Medicine (IOM), 2010).
An improved system of education encourages continued advancement and training. As the world undergoes rapid change, so do the patient needs, hence, the need for a continuous update and training for the nurses. Improved education system will enhance in-depth training and research, which means new ways of handling patients’ problems. The IOM report recommends that nurses should equip themselves with new technological advancement and information management systems in the health sector. This will enable them achieve high competencies and enable them deliver quality health care services. The report further suggests that the education system should allow seamless transition from diplomas to higher education degrees in nursing (IOM, 2010).
There should be effective ways of workforce data collection and analysis to make the data useful for the nursing professionals. The IOM report recommends that the National Health Care Workforce Commission should make collaborative effort to improve research and the collection and analysis of data on healthcare workforce requirements. The information obtained can then be used in distribution of heath facilities all over the country in order to meet the nation’s health requirements. This information can be obtained through analyzing the number of licensed nurses available and the data can be obtained from the health-licensing department. The information obtained can be used to predict the needs of the nursing workforce and inform the education sector of the changes in order to prepare their nurses for those needs. However, this information should be timely and publicized for it to communicate meaning to the nurses (IOM, 2010).
One of the roles of the state based coalition of Nevada is the removal of barriers that make it difficult for nurses to obtain higher levels of education. The Nevada coalition has come up with online nurse training, extension of nurse residencies throughout the state and legislation training. All these are with the aim of bringing the nurses under one umbrella in order to achieve their objectives as a coalition (Dickow, 2012).
For the success of the coalition, the stakeholders have been recruited all around the state and their opinions on leadership collected. Nurse leaders in regulation, education and clinical practice are committed to working together to transform healthcare and achieve the goals of the coalition. They have also developed partnership with other minority communities to facilitate interest into nursing and educate all nurses in addressing healthcare needs (Dickow, 2012).
The coalition has also worked on inter-professional collaboration given the fact that Nevada is relatively a small city; hence, people from all perspectives can interact freely. Following the legislation passed in 2011, the coalition has achieved mobility and utilization of patient care health services provided by APRNs; many of whom are providers of healthcare services in their local areas (Dickow, 2012).
In Nevada, the coalition for action campaign has spearheaded initiatives aimed at advancing the nursing profession. The first initiative to make a transition was the passing of the assembly bill 170 by a constitutional majority in both houses of government. The bill provides that professional titles be changed from Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) to Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). The second part of the bill provided that nursing practitioners should have licenses to practice rather than “certificates of recognition”. The third part of the bill relates to collaborative practice. This part provides that an APRN graduate should have two years’ collaborative agreement with a physician in order to practice and gain experience. However, upon completion of schedule II, no collaborative agreement is required. In addition, APRNs who have practiced for more than two years do not require a collaborative agreement to work in Nevada (Susan, 2013)
The Assembly Bill 170 gives nursing practitioners full practice authority. This bill provides that patients can have direct access to the nurses without going through physicians. This gives nurses authorities to practice fully to the extent of their training and education. The new law allows nursing practitioners to diagnose and prescribe medicine to patients without referrals to specialists. The bill removed unnecessary barriers that limited access to well trained and educated professionals. The patients have direct access to advanced practice Registered Nurse which has decreased wait time for those needing relief (Quinn, 2013).
One of the barriers for the advancement of nursing at the Nevada city is lack of enough funding for the Nevada Coalition for Nurses. The amount that the coalition has is not enough to help then run their programs all over the state. Therefore, there is need for the government to allocate more funds for such coalitions to help boost and improve the nursing profession in Nevada. The nurses can speak in one voice and ask the government and other non-governmental institutions for support.
Another barrier is the ignorance among nursing practitioners with regards to joining the coalition for state based campaign for action. Such organizations help the nursing practitioners to speak in one voice and together, come up with ways of advancing and improving nursing in Nevada state. The live members of the coalition should encourage their fellow members to join the group and engage actively in the activities of the coalition.
In conclusion, it is the duty of the society to engage actively when it comes to matters of their health. Everybody has a role to play in terms of supporting and developing the nursing profession in his or her state. The health of citizens means the economic growth of the state.
