EHR Interoperability
Health informatics is very crucial to healthcare professionals as it aids in
resolving health challenges by applying innovative solutions, therefore, simplifying
information synthesis and processing to the benefit of all stakeholders (Nelson, &
Staggers, 2013).
The Executive Order number 13335 of April 27, 2004, by President George
W. Bush, was and remains very crucial in safeguarding the operational environment
of the United States of America’s multiple healthcare players. The legislation assisted
in sharing information seamlessly among the various players in the healthcare system.
Several benefits have been realized as a result of this presidential order key among
them being a better workflow in public and private service delivery points. Before the
signing of the order, there was ambiguity in managing, for example, patient data.
There were also isolated efforts from different service provides centers such as
universities and hospitals something which prevented the positive impact of health
information technology being felt across the board.
As a result of the Executive order, sanity was realized in how information is
exchanged and shared therefore resulting in better and speedy service delivery.
Without, for instance, electronic health records (EHR) many healthcare programs like

Medicare and Medicaid would be a near impossible today. Evidently, the executive
order has over the past one decade seen improved healthcare delivery something that
has a positive impact on the citizens. EHR Interoperability has resulted in a one-stop
shop that provides healthcare providers with real-time and accurate information
making healthcare provision country wide, exceptionally reliable.
There has been better decision making by providers, especially regarding
patient care as a result of EHR. This is possible mainly because there is reliable
access to client health information from diverse sources than was the case before
resulting in safe and effective care.
EHR Interoperability has resulted into efficiency since in the past costs related
to medical errors, time management and massive resources needed to search for client
data have now been reduced significantly (Medical Practice Efficiencies & Cost
Savings, 2014).
In conclusion, EHR Interoperability is not free from challenges but it has
overtime yielded immense benefits such as practice efficiencies, timesaving, cost
saving, improved accuracy, as well as improved health care quality for Americans.
