Assignment 2: Cohort Follow-up Studies: Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)
Due Week 7 and worth 240 points
Use the Internet and Strayer databases, and recall your readings in Chapter 11 of Introduction to Epidemiology and Chapter 7 of Epidemiology for Public Health Practice to complete this assignment.
Write a five to six (5-6) page paper in which you:
1.Through cohort study designs and other evidence-based management studies, identify the major causes of CVD, and analyze the key steps, including current medications, used to address the disease.
2.Develop at least five (5) leading questions that may be posed to your local health department in regard to mitigating the proliferation of the disease. Provide a sound rationale for raising these questions.
3.Based on the five (5) questions you developed in Question two (2), provide a rudimentary protocol to disseminate this information to your local community leaders.
4.Recommend six (6) steps that may be given to your current or previous place of employment to prevent the proliferation of CVD. Provide support for your recommendations.
5.Use at least six (6) peer-reviewed academic resources in this assignment. These must come from journal sources. Note: Fact Sheets, Wikipedia, and non-academic Websites do not qualify as academic resources.
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:
Analyze evidence-based management, case-control studies, cohorts and randomized clinical trials utilized in clinical epidemiology, and decision making.
Examine the application of epidemiology to specific diseases.
Use technology and information resources to research issues in managerial epidemiology.
Write clearly and concisely about managerial epidemiology using proper writing mechanics.
Social, Behavioral, and Psychosocial Causes of Diseases: Type 2 Diabetes (T2D)
Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is one of the diseases that affect large number of people across the world. The disease causes rise in blood glucose/sugar levels than normal (American Diabetes Association, 2014). The body is unable to use insulin hence this affects the level of blood glucose.
T2D should be diagnosed early as possible as this enhances treatment. T2D cannot be cured, but treatment is intended to keep the blood glucose levels normal as possible to minimize health problems developing later (NHS, 2014). A patient with this disease may be referred to a care team for specialist treatment. In some cases, patients can alter their symptoms by altering their lifestyles such as eating healthy diets (Joy et al. 2013). Other forms of treatments are injection with therapies such as insulin to help balance the level of glucose in the body (Mayo Clinic, 2014).
Five leading questions that may be posed to the local health department in regard to mitigating the spread of this disease include:
- What are the causes of T2D
- Who are the most affected people?
- What are the signs and symptoms of T2D
- What can I do to prevent this disease from affecting me?
- What strategies can be used to increase awareness about the disease?
These five questions are important, as they tend to establish the causes and the strategies or ways that the diseases can be mitigated (Lundgren, Andersen, Isomaa & Tuomi, 2013).
Information is very important and selecting the best channel of communication is critical to ensuing that it reaches the intended audience. Community leaders will get the information through various platforms. The information will be conveyed to the community leaders through channels such as media and elected leaders and as well as through the internet.
Recommended six steps that can prevent proliferation of T2D at the place of employment include:
- Training employees about the disease; causes and symptoms
- Encouraging early screening of the disease
- Making it a policy for the new employees to take a screening test
- Creating awareness using some of the employees suffering and affected by the disease
- Adopting to health life styles to ensure that such diseases does not happen
- Putting in place a fund to help some of the employees suffering from the disease
The rationale for these recommendations is that they will help to reduce the new cases or people suffering from the disease.
