go for Doctorate in Nursing
Reflection
Introduction
Nurses are a very important stakeholders in health care provision. They are no
longer viewed as bedside caregivers to patients. Today’s nursing career requires more
participation of nurses. This is why they are expected to be highly educated and adjust
with the ever changing field of medicine. Acquiring a BSN and DSN is a significant step
in achieving future recommendations of IOM.
Recommendation 4
The future nursing recommendations aim at increasing nurses by eighty percent.
By training to be a nurse, I am contributing in achieving this recommendation (Grice,
2007). I want to continue working with other nurses in providing quality health care in
the society. By increasing the proportion of nurses in Baccalaureate degree, it will enable
me understand my patients and offer proper care. By the year 2020, everyone should

have access to basic health care and I would like to be part of fulfilling this
accomplishment.
Doubling nurses with doctorate
In the year 2020, the IOM recommendations require a double size of nurses with
doctorate qualification. By pursuing my Baccalaureate degree, I am preparing myself for
this achievement. As soon as I complete by BSN degree, I will consider advancing to a
doctorate level. If I accomplish this achievement, I will make a contribution of achieving
the goal of doubling doctorate nurses. I am working hard to be a part of achieving this
goal. The aim of doubling the number of doctorate nurses is improving health care
provision. Highly educated nurses are capable of offering the required standards of care
to patients.
Engaging in lifelong learning
After completion of education, nurses should continue engaging in lifelong
learning. Health care is a dynamic field and it keeps changing frequently. This mainly
applies to me as an individual because I am already a registered nurse. I intend to engage
in learning from experience and from other reliable source. It will help me to gather a
broad range of knowledge in nursing and the entire system of health care.
Identifying options in the job market
High levels of education always scoop more opportunities in the job market.
People with more academic and professional qualifications are always prioritized than
those with lower qualification (Alligood & Marriner-Tomey, 2010). After I complete my
BSN, I hope to be more effective in my current job and get upgrade my status. A BSN

degree is also capable of paying a very attractive salary even to nurses who have recently
acquired a BSN.
Increasing level of education
I wish to pursue a doctorate degree in nursing, after completion of my BSN. This
will increase my knowledge, skills and qualification in the field of nursing. These
attributes highly determine my role in nursing. It will enable me to improve my health
care provision skills to my patients. It will also assist me to carry out my duties
effectively. Nurses are expected to think critically and make rational judgments. By
increasing my level of education, I will certainly achieve this expectation even outside
my working environment.
Nurses should not be viewed as just caregivers to patients. They are capable of
contributing to medical knowledge by discovering new helpful information (Marquis &
Huston, 2009). If I increase my education level, I will gain the ability of carrying out
research and discovering new knowledge. There is no limitation to what nurses can do in
the field of health care. I am capable of introducing better methods of giving care to
patients. By advancing my education, I will enhance my ability of handling my roles in
this profession. Nurses should not just train and accept the status quo in this field. They
should aim at improving it by adding more knowledge and improved practices.
