Psychology Article Analysis

The article under analysis was written by Paul Bloom and is entitled The Way of Lust.
Lust affects how we think about others. According to Immanuel Kant, sexual love makes
a loved person the object of appetite. After the appetite is sated, the loved one is case aside. A
majority of the contemporary feminists contend that sexual desire, if as a result of pornographic
images, leads to objectification where the objectifier (man) views his desire target (woman) as a
sheer thing that lacks individuality, autonomy, and subjective experience (Myers, 2011: 89). The
objectification thesis and many psychologists defend that all people are common-sense dualists.

Focusing on a person’s body too much strips away their personhood. Women in pornography are
not thought of as unfeeling and inanimate objects but compliant and aroused. There is a real
worry with lust and pornography is that the arousal targets as seen to lose some uniquely human
traits. Therefore, they are seen as stripped of dignity, lower-status beings, and animals. Seeing
the flesh makes us sensitive to other people as experiencing beings. The experience of the bodies
of other people can elicit compassion and empathy, or trigger hatred, fear, and disgust. In
addition, moral actions and thoughts are influenced unconsciously by others’ age, sex, race, and
the much skin they are revealing (Bloom, 2013).
Article’s purpose
The article is chiefly informative since after reading the article, a person who was not
aware of the information it relays learns a lot. The article is also trying to convince the reader
that if an objectifier (man) has sexual love for the desire’s object (woman), he sees her as an
appetite object. Therefore, there is a need to be very keen in love since after the appetite is sated,
the woman is usually casted away like a dry lemon is. Another conviction is that people’s moral
actions and thoughts are influenced unconsciously (Myers, 2011: 92).
The field of psychology explained
The field of psychology portrays psychologists as very important people who can study
uncommon but very vital areas. This is informative to the public and it helps is understanding
behavioral flaws and, thereby, choosing the most relevant strategies for addressing them. In the
article, a neuroimaging experiment revealed that for men, looking at sexualized women’s
pictures induces lowered activity in regions of the brain that think about the minds of other
people (Bloom, 2013).

The article has a specific viewpoint; lust influences the manner in which we think about
and view others. The article presents reliable information since it mentions the works and ideas
of great psychologists such as Immanuel Kant, Leslie Green, and Martha Nussbaum. Kingsley
Amis’s novel is also quoted in supporting that sexually, calm, purposeful, and independent
people can be turned into animals they pretend not to be but which they actually are (Bloom,
2013).
The information is believable since it is supported by laboratory findings. Studies justify
that viewing bodies rather than faces leads to judging these people as less likeable, less
ambitious, less intelligent, and less competent. The author together with other philosophers and
psychologists used Timothy Greenfield-Sanders book to study naked and dressed people where
naked people were viewed as having less agency but were enhanced experiencers, and capable of
greater emotional responses and stronger feelings (Myers, 2011: 91). Marilyn Monroe’s
description of love has also been given. The information is persuasive in that at the end of the
article, there is an insight that being aware of the discussed influences is important for being
good and doing right to others.
The article should have explained the factors that are responsible for objectification or
rather, why men have higher tendency of using women as objects for appetite. In addition, there
is a need for an elaboration why moral actions and thought are influenced unconsciously.
