Phlebotomy Device

Research Analysis

The research question for this study was: what reasons influenced the nursing staff
decisions in employing a specific phlebotomy device in their day-to-day practice. In particular,
the researchers wanted to find out the choice factors used by the nurses in their selection of
Vacutainer and butterfly in blood collection. The studies’ literature review was generally
presented and organized. In other words, the literature was on a general topic and not empirical
review of the variable. Much of the studies used were historical, mostly 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008
and 2009. One of the weaknesses was that it did not use current studies; that is, within the
timeline of five years. Only two studies used in this research could be presumed to be current,
one published in 2008 and another 2009, the rest could not meet the five-year timeline for
current studies.
This study’s sample included a total of 14 registered nurses and 11 CAs who had
regularly practiced phlebotomy patients. In total, 25 interviewers were conducted. This sample
was derived from different units in a large metropolitan hospital. The sampling technique used
was basically purposively. This is because the researcher wanted to select only those nurses who
had regularly practiced phlebotomy with patients since they are the ones who could offer
relevant information. This study sample can be presumed to be adequate since qualitative study
is exhaustive with regard to responses given. The selection of the sample was heterogeneous
since the researcher selected the representatives from various acute care units in a metropolitan
hospital.
The purposively research technique was consistent with the study’s qualitative approach
because the selected respondents were supposed to offer a straight description of information on

their area of expertise. The researchers had sought approval from the hospital’s institutional
board, which granted them permission to go on with the study. In addition, written informed
consent was acquired from all the respondents before the actual study. Each participant was
required to supply individual demographic data before the commencement of the interview.
The methodology and description adopted in this study could be very helpful in
replication purposes. However, we are not informed if ethical consideration was adhered to by
the experimenters before conducting the study. Ethical concern such as seeking consent from the
participants and also permission from the institutions where research is to be conducted is
paramount.
