Introduction
Nursing informatics is a practice that is concerned with the exchange of information in
electronic form. Nursing informatics is applied in both nursing care and nursing education. In
nursing education, nursing informatics is predominantly applied through distance and online
education and other educational activities and programs carried through the exchange of
information electronically. The standard framework and guidelines for application of nursing
informatics in nursing education are an essential element of applying nursing informatics in
nursing education (Button, Harrington, & Belan, 2014). This paper discusses the issues of the
framework, and guidelines, commonly used nursing information strategies, barriers to
implementing strategies, ethics in integration with nursing information and nursing practice.

Online and distance learning are widely used approaches to nursing education not only in
the United States but across the world all over. The advancement in technology has led to the

rapid adoption of nursing informatics in delivering educational content to learners. Nursing
informatics is applied to nursing education at all levels in undergraduate, graduate and scholarly
levels. Nursing informatics is a preferred mode of learning due to its ability to deliver education
over long distances and in a convenient manner. In order to effectively apply nursing informatics
in nursing education, following specific standards and guidelines is critical. Classroom-based
nursing education follows specific standards for successful content delivery to learners.
Similarly, nursing informatics applied in nursing education should follow specific standards
(Blais, Hayes, Kozier, & Erb, 2016).
However, there are no universal standard guideline frameworks to guide the application
of nursing informatics in nursing education. The alignment of education content and required
learning environment with nursing informatics to achieve desired educational competencies are
issues surrounding nursing informatics and nursing education (Blais et al., 2016).
Nursing Informatics Strategies
Technology-based and structural strategies have been suggested and applied to ensure the
successful application of nursing informatics in nursing education. Technological strategies are
concerned with aligning the content of the nursing curricula with the current technology in the
market. For instance, the strategy aims at choosing the best-suited computer and internet-based
programs to deliver different types of educational contents for nursing students. Additionally, the
nature of the content of nursing education should be delivered through the most appropriate
program. For instance, experimental sessions taught online are appropriately delivered through
simulators (Foster, 2016).
Also, guidelines on the structural framework for the implementation of nursing
informatics in nursing education are essential. Such universal guidelines include directions on

policies for the infrastructure required to implement nursing informatics to deliver educational
curricula. Further, the strategy focuses on the qualification requirements for the students to enroll
in online and distance education programs that depend on the application of nursing informatics.
The strategy looks into establishing universal guide on entry-level requirements for nursing
students undertaking the educational curricula delivered through by utilization of nursing
informatics (Hübner, Ball, de Fátima Marin, Chang, Wilson, & Anderson, 2016).
Lack of familiarity with computer-based programs and operations and legal framework
are the two barriers facing the implementation of strategies aimed at successfully implementing
nursing education through the application of nursing informatics. Technological advancement
takes place rapidly, and new computer-based applications are developed and utilized in nursing
informatics. Some nursing education instructors lack familiarity with new and evolving elements
of nursing informatics used to deliver educational content. Therefore, instructors cannot
effectively communicate with the students and solve some of the challenges that the students
face while interacting with specific elements of long distance and online learning. Similarly,
instructors may not be capable of aligning the concepts and content that they wish to pass to the
students effectively. Lack of legal framework to guide on the both the students’ and instructors’
qualifications to participate in the implementation of nursing informatics in the nursing education
result into difficulties in interacting with the informatics systems involved. Additionally, the
legal framework should create guidelines for the creation of a hospital environment for practical
sessions that allow students to interact with the patients (Hübner et al., 2016).
Nursing Code of Ethics and Informatics and Application to Practice
Nursing education involves learning through real patients’ data. The nursing code of
ethics requires that patients’ data be kept confidential at all times. The Health Insurance

Portability and Accountability Act states that for such purposes, patient identification details
should be presented concerning codes and numbers. Therefore, while interacting with data from
patients, the identification information should be kept confidential. The ethical principle of
veracity requires that healthcare professionals be truthful in their practice. In applying nursing
informatics to deliver nursing education at different levels, there is no mechanism to verify the
originality of the interaction between the student and the instructor. For instance, there is no
method of verifying if the person interacting with the instructor is the student enrolled in that
program. Nursing students are therefore required to exercise the veracity when undertaking
nursing education through the application of nursing informatics (Daydé, 2016).
Conclusion
Application of nursing informatics requires standardized guidelines to ensure uniformity
and maximal student education of content. Technological and structural strategies have been
applied to achieve efficient nursing education through nursing informatics. Educational,
regulatory agencies should come up with standard requirements for the implementation of online
and distance education in nursing, which relies on nursing informatics. Legal frameworks should
be drawn to achieve effective nursing education delivered through nursing informatics.
Additionally, the code of ethics in nursing should be part of the standards of nursing informatics
in nursing education.
