Combining Nurse Leader with Advocacy: Self reflection

Leadership in nursing is essential to foster attainment of the organizational goals. Nurses
are required to have good leadership attributes to enable them to achieve their objectives and
goals. This paper is a personal reflection on various content areas and on leadership skills to
trigger changes in the workplace among others.

Accountability is concerned with how one is able to use the opportunity effectively to
meet the underlined goals (Sadi & Uyar, 2013). Personal accountability is therefore, the ability to
take actions to achieve certain goals (Yukl, 2012). Likewise professional accountability is
concerned with how one uses his or her professional to impact on the society or the people that
he meets. One of the strengths that I posses in line with my personal and professional
accountability is that I focus on what is most important and ensure that I give it the best. I am
also accountable if I help to influence others positively. So far, this far I can affirm that I have
helped to motivate others through my interactions and association. When it comes to my
professional requirements, I have used my skills and knowledge to transform the lives of people
through motivation. Likewise, there are some noticeable weaknesses on my personal and
professional accountability especially when I have failed to humble and utilize what I am
expected to trigger positive change.
Career planning is also important in helping an individual to achieve his/her goals in a
certain field. Nurses must also invest in their careers to help them develop new skills to face the
challenges in their profession. Strengths of career planning are those that allow an individual to
attain high levels of competencies in a particular field. It also allows an individual to attain
personal goals and to reach his or her level of satisfaction. Career planning requires an individual
to commit him/herself to be in a position to achieve positive outcomes. The career should be
relevant and application to solving the problems that people face.
Personal journey discipline encompasses the commitments of an individual to remain
focused to the goals or objectives that one wishes to achieve (Sadi & Uyar, 2013). This is
important because, it ensures that an individual lives up to his or her ambitions in life amidst

challenges. There are challenges in life that may make a person to deviate leading to failure to
attain the goals.
Reflective practice is an intellectual exercise carried out in order to find out how ones
beliefs and assumptions, backgrounds and experiences impacts on the functioning of the
organization (Yukl, 2012). My reflective practice reference behaviors are positive as indicated by
the decisions I make. My leadership style involves close monitoring of behaviors among the
people and selecting the best from the list. I do believe that leading others requires a person to
understand the values and status of the people that one leads.
Change is something that different organizations and people receive differently. In an
organization context, we have people that adopt change easily while others are late adopters
(Ussahawanitchakit, 2011). Therefore, it is important to ensure that proper strategies are in
place to ensure that people does not fear change. I can use my leadership skills to agitate for
change in my workplace by engaging in constructive debate and discussion with the management
(Jiao, Richards, & Zhang, 2011). The change should be clearly communicated to the
management to enable them to understand the impacts the change will have on their
organization.
My personal goals for leadership growth are to rise up to the senior manager of an
organization I am working. I will achieve this through my plan that will guide me. The first
thing is to acquire skills and knowledge about leadership and qualities of leaders. I will also
engage in leadership roles at the grassroots level in small groups. This opportunity will give me
some insights on how to lead and manage. Furthermore, I will attend seminars on leadership
skills to share and learn from successful managers and leaders. Through such seminar, I will

understand leadership better. I will also take upon my initiative to work hard to ensure that I
achieve my endeavors to be able to increase my chances of ascending to management level.
