IOM future of Nursing Recommendations

Because of changes that are taking place currently in the health care system, there are many changes that have been recommended for future nurses and nursing. Since health care system is changing from patient-treatment to disease prevention, IOM has recommended that the government increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020 (Shulman, Leonard, Benner, Sutphen & Day, 2013). I fit in this recommendation because from now until 2020, I have enough time and skills to enable me to attain a baccalaureate degree. Thus, if I attain a baccalaureate degree before 2020, I will have fit and contributed towards attaining 80% and hence, improving quality of health care services rendered.

IOM also recommended that we double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020. I can see myself fitting into this recommendation because all I have to do is simply to study hard. Regardless of your academic qualification right now, everybody is able and has a chance to attain doctorate because of bridging and advance courses that nursing colleges offer currently (Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, at the Institute of Medicine., Robert Wood Johnson Foundation., & Institute of Medicine (U.S.), 2011). Hence, I fit in this recommendation because by 2020 I ought to have studied hard and attained a doctorate and by achieving this, I will be helping towards achieving this recommendation. I will also advice all my friends in nursing field who do not hold doctorate to go for advanced studies so that they can help to attain this recommendation.

Timby (2009) asserts that as the saying goes, learning is a continuous process. Hence, there is need for nurses to be engaged in a lifelong learning. This is because new technologies, drugs, process, ideas, among many other things are changing and invented daily. Hence, every nurse ought to be learning daily in order to remain informed on new technologies and ideas. In order to ensure that nurses are engaged in lifelong learning, I will simply tell them significance of continuous learning. I will also recommend that nurses should be given time to learn about what is happening across the world in the field of nursing.

Based on my educational level, my job options in the market would be doctor, nurse or pharmacist. This is because I have education in health sciences, and majored in nursing. In addition, due to projected shortage of nurses by 2020, I have a good chance of securing nursing job in the market.

Currently, education is the key to success. People are hired based on their academic qualifications. People with higher education qualifications are considered first before the people with low qualifications (Finkelman & Kenner, 2010). Hence, increasing my level of education will affect positively how I compete in the current job market. This is because, if I have higher education qualifications than my competitors, I will be always first choice in case there is a job vacancy. Furthermore, my level of expertise will be high hence, making me more competitive than other people who are searching job in the same field.

Furthermore, increasing my level of education will affect positively my role in the future of nursing. This is because since IOM has recommended that we increase the proportion of nurses with baccalaureate degree to 80% and double number of nurses with doctorate by 2020, there is possibility that people who will not have attained this qualifications will be forced to be relieved off their duties. On the other hand, all people who will have these qualifications will have jobs waiting them.
