DRUG INDUCED PSYCHOSIS

What is the lived experience of drug induced psychosis among young adults?
Most of people with mental illness experience double challenges. On one hand, they
struggle with disabilities and symptoms associated with the disease whereas on the other hand,
they experience challenges associated with prejudice that arise from publics misconceptions
about mental health (Shrivastava, Johnston, & Bureau, 2012). Due to these two challenges,
young people diagnosed with drug induced psychosis are robbed off the opportunities that

normally define the quality of life such s good jobs, safe housing, social interaction and
satisfactory health (Kuipers et al., 2014).
Although there has been extensive research on the impact of stigmatization in other
mental illness such as schizophrenia, dementia, bipolar among other, much more work is
needed so as to fully understand the breadth of prejudice against people living with drug
induced psychosis (Burns, Erickson, & Brenner, 2014; Malla, Joober, & Garcia, 2015). The
study attempts to explore the living experiences of youths diagnosed with drug-induced
psychosis by focusing on the impact of prejudice and stigmatization on the quality of their lives.
The study’s research method is qualitative study that involves semi-structured interview that lasts
10-15 minutes. The study objectives include;
1) To explore the living experiences of young men diagnosed with drug induced psychosis
2) To identify factors that enhance their ability to cope with their life experiences
3) To identify factors that diminish their ability to cope with their daily life experiences
4) To describe evidence based coping strategies that will help the young men to cope with
this mental illness
The study will be guided by ADAPT model theoretical framework. This model stipulates
that the society is grounded on five main psychosocial pillars including a) safety/ security; b)
Bonds/Networks; c) Justice; d) Roles and e) existential meaning. The model is used to guide the
study because the pillars are considered to be essential in psychosocial recovery in patients
diagnosed with drug induced psychosis (Welsh et al., 2015).
