Public health refers to private as well as public organized measures whose intention is prolonging life, promoting health, and preventing disease among populations as a whole. Basically, the focus is the entire population as opposed to individual diseases or patients and there is a keen concern on providing conditions where people can be healthy. Professionals try to stop problems from recurring or happening through recommending policies, conducting research, administering services, and implementing educational programs (Gillespie, Baird & Peel, 2013).

With older adults, there is the need to improve their function, health, and quality of life. It is acknowledged that older adults form one of the fastest increasing age group as the first baby boomers who were born between 1946- 1964 turned sixty five years in 2011. It is predicted that by 2030, above 37 million people in the group will be managing two or more chronic conditions. The health of the elderly is important since they are at a high vulnerability of developing chronic diseases as well as the related disabilities including arthritis, congestive heart failure, diabetes mellitus, and dementia that leads to many deaths. Many old people cannot live independently ensuring their quality care is hard, they need professional expertise in the services they receive, and preventive services are very important to them (HealthyPeople.gov., 2013).

Every year, the elderly experience many falls; on average, every one out of three old adults falls. This results to critical disability among the survivors. The resulting injuries can lead to impaired function, sedentary behavior, fear of falling, and lower life quality. After a fall, death may result from an unintentional injury. Usually, the elderly are taken care of by caregivers at home and these undergo through a lot of stress that leads to substandard care. The elderly suffer from multiple chronic diseases and, therefore, they require comprehensive care. Preventive health services can go a long way in managing their health (Talen & Burke, 2013).
