Healing Environment

A healing environment is supported by the organizational culture or the physical
setting such as the hospital buildings supporting families and patients in undergoing through
hospitalization, illness, process of healing, medical visits and bereavement. Majority of
people consider a healing environment to be represented by a hospital or health clinic. In the
contemporary world, homes are part of the healing environments.
A healing environment is influenced by the cultural and personal preferences
depending on context. Healing is different from curing. Curing is connected with decreasing
symptoms, fixing problems and eradicating diseases (Huelat, 2003). Individuals can be cured
while still not healed. Individuals are taught to live with permanent health conditions such as
Diabetes.
The concepts of healing are related to making it whole in connecting the body, mind
and spirit, this is an indication that healing hospitals are attached to issues of spirituality
(Huelat, 2003). Creating a healing environment in a hospital is complex; multiculturalism is
one of the contributors to the challenges. A healing environment is characterized with
artwork, light, color, space, texture and shape. Additional features are aromas, sounds,

sensations, social environment, physical environment and the natural environment. A hospital
environment finds it challenging fulfilling the choices of individual patients (Huelat, 2003).
Jeremiah 33:6 reflects on healing and curing; quoting from the Bible in King James
Version (Cambridge Edition). “Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them,
and I will reveal unto them the abundance of Peace and Truth”. The Bible in Jeremiah 33:6
has set it clear on healing environments, which God had the capacity of healing and curing
the State of sicknesses and wounds in restoring prosperous and peaceable State.
Healing and curing are used interchangeably, but the two terms are different. Patients
have different responses to the healing environments that influence the desired medical
outcomes. The healing environment is related to mind, body and the spirit.
